Mold Resources

After part design, the single biggest factor in part quality is the quality of the mold. Understanding mold life expectancy, prototyping options, construction standards and transfer considerations helps you make informed decisions and avoid costly surprises. R&D Plastics selects moldmakers based on the specific requirements of each project.

Mold Categories

Different applications require different levels of mold investment. Here are the general categories we work with:

PROTOTYPE MOLDS

Used to validate part design and function before committing to a production tool. Prototype molds are typically lower-cost and faster to build, but are not intended for high-volume runs.

INSERT MOLDS (MASTER UNIT DIE)

A cost-effective option for smaller parts or lower volumes. Inserts fit into a standardized mold base, reducing tooling cost while still producing quality parts.

LIMITED PRODUCTION MOLDS

Built for small-volume production where a full production mold isn’t justified. These balance cost and durability for shorter runs.

PRODUCTION MOLDS

Designed and built for sustained production at consistent quality levels. These molds are specified to handle the expected part volume over their full lifespan.

HIGH VOLUME PRODUCTION MOLDS

Engineered for the longest life and highest output. These molds use premium materials and construction to maintain quality across very large production quantities.
