Disk Drive Housing

The Challenge

A customer in the computer industry needed a PC/ABS housing to enclose disk drives. Measuring 7” x 5” x 2”, the part presented a significant challenge in both tooling design and molding due to its complexity.

The Approach

R&D Plastics produced the component using a mold with four external slides, an internal lifter and reverse ejection. Precision mold design and construction were critical to the outcome. The housing was molded on a 190-ton Toshiba machine. Each part undergoes dimensional inspection along with verification of surface finish, knitline integrity and color.

The Result

The project demonstrated R&D’s ability to design and build complex tooling that delivers high yield rates of quality parts — even with challenging geometries and tight cosmetic requirements.
