Waste Management

Spinning Rotor

The Challenge

A customer in the waste management industry brought R&D Plastics a spinning rotor design that was functional for its intended purpose but presented opportunities for improvement in tooling and the injection molding process.

The Approach

The R&D engineering team worked with the customer to refine the design, creating a robust part that is easier to manufacture. The rotor is made of polyoxymethylene (POM), measures 3” in diameter by 0.5” tall, and is powered by pressurized water to spray in a unique rectangular pattern. After molding, each part is tested for functionality and dimensional conformance.

The Result

The design revisions produced a more robust part at a lower manufacturing cost than the original design — a direct result of the engineering team’s focus on optimizing for production.
